Connections need shared meaning
Moving a record from one system to another is only part of an integration. Teams also need to understand what the information means, whether it is current, who can use it, and what should happen when a message is incomplete or inconsistent.
Build around the workflow
- Inventory the systems, interfaces, and information owners involved.
- Define the data mappings, terminology, and operational context.
- Design access controls and appropriate information boundaries.
- Plan reconciliation, retries, monitoring, and exception handling.
Use standards thoughtfully
HL7 FHIR is a standard for exchanging healthcare information electronically. It can provide a useful foundation for API-oriented integration, but a successful implementation still depends on the participating systems, supported versions, profiles, and agreed workflows. See the HL7 FHIR overview for the standard’s scope.
Make the connection operable
Agree who monitors the interface, how errors are surfaced, and how changes are tested. A well-documented integration should be understandable to the teams responsible for it after launch.
