Connected records need more than a connection.

Why meaning, ownership, and exception handling belong in a healthcare integration plan from the start.

An integration can move information successfully while still leaving the people using it confused. The record arrives, but the context is missing. A field has a different meaning. A correction never reaches the downstream workflow.

Start with the information’s purpose

Before defining an interface, explain what a person or process needs to do with the information. That purpose helps determine which fields matter, how current the data must be, and which exceptions need immediate attention.

Standards help, but do not replace agreement

HL7 FHIR provides a standard for the electronic exchange of healthcare information. It offers a common foundation, while implementations still need agreement on versions, supported resources, profiles, terminology, and access. An API endpoint by itself does not establish those agreements.

Design the unhappy path

What happens when a message arrives twice, an identifier does not match, or a receiving system is unavailable? These are operational design questions. They need answers before a connection becomes part of someone’s daily work.

  • Make failures visible to a named owner.
  • Define retry and reconciliation behavior.
  • Preserve enough context to investigate a problem without over-collecting sensitive data.
  • Test schema changes and corrections, not only new records.

Prepare the foundation for AI

An AI workflow inherits the limitations of its information supply. Reliable context, appropriate access, and clear provenance are useful foundations before adding retrieval or generation. Sometimes the most valuable AI-readiness work is an integration improvement.
